weekending

I realize it's nearly time for another weekend... ah well. I wanted to revive this old "regular" that I used to do in years past, so I remembered to take pictures all weekend long! And then forgot to post them. Oops!

Coffee. Lots of it.

Still getting used to drinking decaf (currently eliminating caffeine & alcohol, doctor's orders, to help with my altitude-sickness).

Streaming KPCC from Los Angeles (because Denver's NPR station is BAD).

Ironing kitchen towels (ironing can be so therapeutic).

Delicious breakfasts by {lovah}.

Some lawn mowing.

And leaf-raking, and stick-picking-up, and bush-trimming, and lawn-clipping-bagging (oh ps. that yard that we wanted so much? hate it. miss our tiny yard and our gardeners like CRAZY).

Screen-installing. Home-airing.

Happiness is: discovering you have a lilac bush in your front yard!!!!!

Spring-bringing. Into the house, that is.

Nature-reveling.

There was also a lot of eating out, with several misses but at least one really tremendous hit. More about that meal at a later date!

clean slate

I love Mondays. I know that many people consider Monday their least favorite day of the week, because they have to go back to work after a few days of "personal" time. But for me, Mondays are the start of something fresh and new. They are a clean slate. I often work weekends since I'm in the event business, so perhaps my schedule is a bit skewed... But I love the fact that Monday restarts each new week, full of new ideas, new discoveries, new potential.

It's a little warmer out this morning, and the sun is shining. I know winter isn't over yet, but the warmer days every once in a while remind me that we're on the cusp of spring. Spring-- the season when everything springs back to life. I cannot wait for it to arrive! In the meantime, I have some exciting styling jobs on my plate this week and a best friend coming to town for a visit! Hope your week looms ahead with many things to look forward to, as well!

monday monday

Monday again. Back to the grind. But such a pleasant grind!

I must confess the Academy Awards were a bit of a disappointment. Apart from the actual awards (most were quite well-deserved, in my opinion), Esmerelda Spalding's heavenly vocals, and seeing my girl-crush, Rooney Mara, looking exquisite... well, the show was a let-down. And I was a little devastated by Billy Crystal's racist remarks. I was reminded why I left the film industry, and why I love the wedding industry so very, very much.

Fun stuff to come this week: flowers, yummy baked goods, and copious cups of tea. Just a few of my favorite things!

beautiful big bear

Yesterday I awoke to another eight inches of snow. On top of the 2+ feet that still remained from the last snowstorm, everything seems devastatingly snowy to me. I find it both funny and sad how quickly the novelty-aspect wears off. The sun is shining today, so hopefully it will melt, melt, melt the aforementioned snow. In the meantime, I've been going through pictures and remembering times when I was warm!

When I needed an escape from Los Angeles smog (which I now miss, believe it or not!), my favorite excursion was to drive the two hours up into the mountains, and rent a cabin in Big Bear. Whether getting a bit of color on the porch, or sitting in front of the fire on a cooler evening, everything about Big Bear is relaxing. I love the hustle and bustle of urban living, but sometimes it's nice to take a break, breath the fresh air, revel in the beauty of nature, and recharge.

A view like this is a tremendous stress reliever!

And besides my own home, there isn't anything more cozy than a cabin.

Nothing says "relax" like a beer tasting.

Alpine sledding? Sure, why not!

Hiking? Yeah, I dig that!

Taking the ski lift to drink in the gorgeous scenery? Yes, please!

And it's pretty magical to look up at the night sky and see it filled with stars!

Big Bear is a skiing destination during the winter and it's quite lovely to visit then, but I prefer it during the off-season, when it's perfectly sunny and warm, wonderfully green and blue, less crowded, and exceptionally serene.

staying positive

Winter seems endless. I've never seen so much snow in my life. But I'm trying to stay positive and people keep reminding me that spring is just around the corner. I can hardly wait to see the dead landscapes of Colorado transformed into radiant green!

radio silence

Thanks to all who have sent messages and tried to alert me that my website was down. It was actually out since Tuesday night due to some major hard-drive failures at the server host. As a result, my email wasn't working properly either, so I've been biting my fingernails the past few days, feeling somewhat at a loss.... you've no idea how much I rely on this site and my email for the day-to-day operations of running this business. I told my grandmother about this over the phone yesterday, and about the blizzard we're currently experiencing here in Denver, and she encouraged me to use the time wisely and consider it a "gift." I did manage to clean my office after having turned it into a war zone while I was prepping and paying my business taxes... and now that we're back "online," I'm excited to jump back into corresponding with my clients, relaying new design ideas, and of course, blogging!

Have a wonderful weekend! Real wedding coming at you on Monday morning!

january afternoon

I arrived home yesterday after being with my family in Cleveland for a week. The "currently reading" post that went up last Tuesday had been scheduled in advance, but otherwise the lack of posting was due to the fact that I was traveling, and grieving. My younger cousin Peter, who had been tormented by mental illness for the past ten years, chose to leave this life in search of something better. I still can't think of him without crying, but I am comforted by the knowledge that he is finally free.

It is good to be back home with my husband, and back to work. Emails have piled up. Meetings have been rescheduled. Taxes still need to be finished. Work is good, and keeps my mind occupied. Because the truth is, life goes on. I feel like taking a week to grieve with my family may be considered indulgent in this day and age, but the reality of the situation is... I needed it.

Denver is cold and dreary, much like Cleveland was. I do long for a bit of sunshine and some warmer days, to help me shake this melancholy. Fortunately, I have these pictures, taken January 20th, 2011. Just one year ago, this is how green and sunshiny my back patio was in Los Angeles. I had a snack lunch under the shade of my sun umbrella. Tea and toast on a chilly day in Colorado isn't quite the same, so I am grateful to have these images to bolster my spirits. Life goes on, and we learn to cope as best we are able...

Back to work!

strike

I refrained from posting yesterday in support of the SOPA blackout. In fact, other than posting one image on instagram in the morning (before I realized what day it was!), I stayed off the internet all day long. No Facebook, no Twitter, no Google+, no blogging, even minimal emailing. I figured that refraining from using the internet at all would make a more important statement than just delaying my blog post by a day.

I feel very strongly about our freedom in this country. I hope you do, too. Limiting our internet access in any way is an infringement on our personal liberty, and I'm pretty horrified that this issue has even come up.

But it was nice to have a day of being mostly unplugged. It turned out to be the most productive day I've had all week! And I even had time for a little Martha.

wrapping it up

I can hardly believe that Christmas is mere days away. Two of my dearest friends-slash-surrogate-family have been visiting, so my time has been spent with them and I've gotten a tad behind on holiday preparation. Not to worry, though, time with family and friends is far more important-- because isn't that what the holidays are all about???

I have managed to get a few gifts purchased, wrapped, and sent off to their prospective recipients. Putting together pretty packages is loads of fun and every year I try to come up with something new. Last year it was kraft paper and metallic ribbons, this year it's butcher paper and colorful yarn.

I'll try to post photos of my holiday decor in the next day or two, but in the meantime I hope you're enjoying every bit of this magical season, and anticipating the great things in store in the New Year!

marriage

Today marks the 65th wedding anniversary of my maternal grandparents. SIXTY-FIVE YEARS!!! They are now in their mid-80's, and as a couple they have been my role models for a happy, healthy marriage. My husband and I often say that if we can love each other even half as much as Grammy and Grandpa do, we'll be golden.

I love these pictures from my sister Olivia's wedding. Aren't they precious? I wouldn't be the wife, the daughter, the sister, the business woman, the artist that I am today if it weren't for George and Laurie Hoke and the incredible influence they've had on my life. They have shaped my world in every possible way, and I owe them so very, very much.

I know I am blessed to still have grandparents around, and I am grateful for Grammy and Grandpa every single day. My wish today is that they will be granted many more years of health and happiness together.
